Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia
Kim Sang-Yun

Abstract
Dementia is a syndrome characterized by cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms. Recently the importance of non-cognitive symptoms has become increasingly recognized. Behavioural and psychological symptoms in dementia(BPSD) is the collective term which grouped many variable, troublesome non-cognitive symptoms. It is important that the nature of the term is clearly understood. The fine definitions and their exact frequentcies are also needed. The key symptoms include agitation (describing a cluster of related symptoms including anxiety, irritability and motor restlessness, often leading to many diverse behavioural symptoms), psychosis (referring to hallucinations, usually visual; delusions, which are usually simple ideas pertaining to theft or being talked about; delusional misidentification, which includes the Capgras delusion as well as misidentification of television and mirror images) and mood disorders (mainly depression and anxiety); other symptoms which can be important include sexual disinhibition, eating problems and abnormal vocalizations.
